This classic by George Eliot is considered her masterpiece. It is a study of every class of society in a town called Middlemarch.

The focus, however, is on Dorothea Brooke and Tertius Lydgate, both of whom enter disastrous marriages.

Dorothea is an earnest intelligent woman who chooses to marry a pompous scholar and makes a big error in judgment in doing so.

She wishes to work with him while he expects her to merely act as his secretary. She eventually starts doubting his talent.

Meanwhile, Lydgate’s story unfolds.

He’s a progressive young doctor, who’s passionate about his research.

He gets involved with Rosamond and marries her. She turns out to be shallow and uninterested in his work and her expensive ways force him to the brink of financial ruin.
