One of the best books in the field of psychology, Robert Sapolsky’s “Behave” answers the question “Why do we do the things we do?”.
Robert beautifully weaves the narrative of factors that influence a person’s reaction in the moment a behaviour occurs and then traces it back to the deep history of our species.
He first starts with a behaviour that occurs – good or bad.
Next, what went on in the brain of the person a second before the behaviour?
Then the scope is changed to a little earlier in time – what sight, sound or smell caused the brain to produce that behaviour?
What hormones played their part days before to lead up to that response in the present?
This way Robert keeps increasing the field of vision to understand how certain behaviours in the present are a culmination of things that happened over the years.
He covers areas like culture, ecological factors and even evolutionary factors.
