Author Michelle Kuo believes in the power of reading, in how it can help connect people with each other and create a shared universe.

In her TED talk on the healing power of reading, she discusses how reading can change our lives.

After leaving one of the poorest regions in America where she worked as a teacher, in order to pursue a law degree, she learned that one of her students had fought and killed someone.

That incident convinced her to return to the place and visit him regularly.

He had a daughter to whom she convinced him to write letters.

After noticing how his writing has regressed, she decided to bring him books each time she visited him.

From guidebooks to novels to poetry, they spent time reading in silence, together.

Watch the TED talk here on how it helped that he read all of those things.
