Girard’s brilliant ideas and unconventional views on literature, religion and psychoanalysis are encapsulated in this highly acclaimed book.

Girard’s initial assumption is what he likes to call “mimesis”. It is the conflict that arises when humans compete to differentiate themselves from each other, but end up becoming more alike.

And at certain points of time, such conflicts result in crises in which such differences culminate in violence of sorts.

Most primitive societies use scapegoating as means to resolve the crises in which the community decides to turn on a victim.

This cycle of collective murder is observed in the foundations of religions and social orders alike.

Girard goes on to argue that, if Christ was sacrificed, it was not because God willed it, but because human beings wanted it.

The book is not just a biblical exegesis, but discusses other problems like the social efficacy of violence and how anti-semitism works.
