Channel News Asia runs an award winning investigative series called Undercover Asia.

It exposes the secret criminal underbelly of Asia by exploring gripping crime stories, violence and injustice meted out in the world’s largest continent.

In their latest season, they continue to shed light on some of the darkest corners of our society and dig deeper into pressing socio-economic issues.

One such episode titled “Vanishing Without a Trace”/ “Evaporated People” finds out why some people in Japan are ‘disappearing’ themselves.

Every year, nearly 100,000 Japanese go MIA without any trace. They’re known as johatsu or “evaporated people”.

The episode is an attempt to understand what drives them to engineer their own disappearances.
